Lesser known meaning of "composition"

It is impossible to paint scientifically, with the appropriate tone and edge to every physical item represented. So you construct a "composition", evaluating the main elements of a painting.
Certain key leafs on a tree for example or certain pieces of evidence portraying the tonal range of the sky, or touches of colour.
Is this impressionism? Abstraction? Or merely the act of "composing" a picture.
