I went to Art College in London, training in Fine Art Painting at Central School of Art and Design.

After I left I started drawing portraits in London in the 1980's, practising "street portraiture"which is a bit like a performance art. Working in front of an audience is scary but keeps me in touch with the families' response to the portrait. It is a successful method of working because the development of the portrait is seen, and understood to be in an uneasy and perpetual stage of balance.
I work well under pressure and enjoy the collaboration between artist and sitter. I also learn more about people and about drawing when working quickly, and from life. It takes me on average just 30 minutes to paint an "on-the-spot" portrait.

Below, and from left to right: David Thompson, Percy Pontin, Kirsty, Alan Davis and Tony Cooper -oil sketches.
These paintings are completed in under half an hour while models sit for Artlark painting classes. See Artlark pages for more about the classes and "Musicians" page for quick sketches of musicians.
These portraits were painted from September to November 2007.
